Plein-Air Painting Watercolor Workshop with Holly Meeker Rom

This workshop is designed for the beginner, intermediate, or advanced art student who is interested in painting with watercolors. The basics will be introduced with lecture and demonstration and hands-on application. Students will learn basic watercolor strokes using flat and round brushes on paper support, information about pigments and brushes, and during the first class, practice with materials. On Saturday, students will plan a painting from sketches to be painted en plein-air, if the weather permits.  If not, students will paint indoors from photos taken on location.   About the instructor: Holly Rom lived in Rye for 23 years and her watercolors, house portraits, and prints have been purchased by many individuals. She has 34 years of experience as a professional watercolor painter and instructor. Several of her watercolors are featured in the permanent art collection of the Osborn Retirement Home. She has an MFA in painting from American University. She has received numerous awards in national and regional juried competitions. Mrs. Rom loves teaching and is dedicated to helping all levels of adults learn new things. She has been a docent at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for 17 years in school programs.

Looking for a break from incessant screens, chores and other weekend responsibilities? Jump into Improv, the best way to take a break from the mindlessness of daily life. Live in the moment in this class designed to let your creativity and laughter flow. Improv isn’t only for actors and comedians, it’s for everyone. In fact, many of the skills you learn in an Improvisation class can serve you well in your everyday life. Plus, you can’t make a mistake in Improv! It’s all part of the fun. All you need to do is show up and say what’s on your mind! This two-hour workshop will cover the basic building blocks of improvisation, including saying YES, justification, agreement, and storytelling. Students will play games, do exercises, and create scenes in a relaxed, non-judgmental forum.

Loosen up and Paint: A BYOB Night Out! with Laura Anechiarico

BYOB and join us for an evening of self expression through paint! No paint-by-numbers, no pressure to be perfect – workshop will start with a simple still-life and progress from there. Participants will be encouraged to work at their own pace, and in their own style. No experience necessary; if you’ve never picked up a paintbrush, make this the first time! All supplies included. The Art and Craft of Songwriting with Nina Ossoff

This workshop will guide participants on how to harness and develop their songwriting skills.  Songwriters will be encouraged to bring in samples of their work for critique and discussion. The focus of the class will be on how to better their songs. In addition, song forms in all genres will be analyzed for greater understanding.

Halloween Polymer Clay Pumpkin Workshop with Terry Taylor

Get spooky this Halloween at The Rye Art Center! Use polymer clay to create your own pumpkin faces and then dress it up in a clay costume or make a funny face. During this workshop you will design your own unique pumpkin faces. Terry Taylor shows students how to transform simple balls and coils of clay into a one-of-a-kind pumpkin. Includes all supplies.

That’s right, try Improv WITH the grown-up of your choice. The two of you will join a group of other adults and kids, and together we’ll explore the exciting, hilarious and fast-paced world of Improv! Improv is a fantastic opportunity to get seriously silly, express yourself, and learn together. Improvisation is good for your brain: we are at our best when we live in the moment, and Improv allows you to do just that. Play games, do exercises, and make scenes together intergenerationally, and see what fun it can be to make things up together, as you go along! No experience is necessary. Just come with an open mind, and a grown-up!
